Allyn Hogoboom

My father, Allyn Hogoboom, was a painter who worked in a variety of mediums including fresco, tempera, and plaster. He studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now the California College of the Arts) in the late1950’s. His passion was for religious topics and iconography, although he did other topics on occasion.

The Last Supper

The Crucifixion

The photo is very poor. This painting is one that my sister still has in her home.

He was discouraged later in his life and disposed of many of his works. I only have a few pictures. The “Last Supper” above was sent to me by someone who found my old blog. I am sorry I lost her name, but she purchased it in Sausalito in the early 1970’s.

The Christ

This is a work in the Collection of The Albatross Pub in Berkeley. We lived nearby and my dad hung out there a lot circa 1968 to 1972. The current owners probably lost the information about the painting and have it labeled “Brown Lady.” It is actually a picture of Jesus. As children, my sister and I would jokingly tell men and women apart by whether they had “square or round boobies” so this is definitely the image of a man.

Mary and Mary Magdalene

This image formed in colored, wet plaster of Paris is one he gave me. It also shows the rustic frames he hand made. I used to help him put gold leaf on as a girl.

Mary and the baby Jesus

This is a wood carving that dad had given his brother and his wife. When my aunt downsized, she sent it to me to keep in the family collection.

      Hi Kaethe,

I am delighted you contacted me. I would love to have any pictures of my dad’s paintings, and permission to post them would be great.

I am also collecting works from my family members and hope to find a museum or institution to take them. If you are offering me one of his works, I would love it. I am happy to pay for the shipping of course.

      My direct email is nhogoboom@hotmail.com.

Again, than you for contacting me.
